Descriptors

It is possible to assemble lists of words that have been used by various musicians / musicologists for describing sounds, sound categories, and processing applied to sounds. Many of these should be applicable to the description of musical textures and / or musical gestures. The EARS site has many of these terms, in several languages. The IMP-NESTAR project is actively researching these and other potentially useful terms, also in several languages, and investigating their application and ambiguities.
