2 -- Musical textures and gestures
- what are they / what do we mean by these terms?
- how do / can we describe their characteristics & properties?
why did I choose texture and gesture?
because they have become fundamental materials of 20th century music but as yet
have been scarcely examined in any rigorous fashion within the context of music
analysis nor music perception & cognition studies
-- because the
words, though seemingly potent, and often used, are not unequivocally defined,
and are borrowed (like so many musical terms) from other fields
-- because they are singularities which depend on time for their manifestation -- neither can be frozen for study
